Winter is the time of year when a lot of us prefer to spend as much time as possible indoors, away from the bitter cold. For deck owners, the arrival of winter means that this area of the home tends to get neglected—who wants to sit out there in this kind of weather? That’s the wrong way to look at the matter, though. It takes only a little effort to create a relaxing, comfortable environment on your deck, even as Jack Frost closes in. What follows are a few tips for doing just that.
Install a Patio Heater – Heating the deck is an obvious way to counter the wintertime blues, but not everyone is enthused about the idea of installing a fire pit or anything else that has an open flame. Patio heaters provide a safe alternative. They operate by radiating heat in a two- to eight-feet radius, depending on the capability of the device. These appliances are available in a variety of models—including propane, natural gas, and electric-powered types—so it shouldn't be difficult to find one that accommodates your preferences and space requirements.
Get Some Cushions and Blankets – The old-fashioned method of staying warm inside during the winter works in outdoor environments as well. Be sure to have extra blankets on hand for your guests.
Protect Your Plants – Plants provide a great way to introduce some color and life into your deck area—but what happens when winter hits? A few simple steps can help the plants on your deck last a little longer. If frost is on the way, try to cover your plants at night with some kind of lightweight material for protection. Just be sure to uncover them in the morning. Another way to minimize frost damage is to move the plants close to the house, preferably under a roof.
